Widespread Career Opportunities for Computer Graduates

The job market for computer based jobs is constantly expanding, so this is a great time to get your foot in the door.

Whether or not you have previous experience with computers, it's not too hard to increase your chance of getting a job working with computers. The best thing you can do is try to gain some experience working odd temp jobs.

Computer engineering involves programming software and hardware, building on knowledge of electronics and circuits. A computer engineer designs and builds computers, such as PCs, workstations, and supercomputers, as well as computer-based systems like those found in cars, planes, appliances, electronics, phones, and communication networks.

Computer engineering is different from computer science in that computer science is more concerned with the theoretical understanding of computation and programming. It is also different from electrical engineering in that computer engineering prepares students for more complicated computer engineering positions, while electrical engineering is a broader field. However, both fields include computer programming to a significant degree, and a good electrical foundation is required.

Computer engineers are typically divided into computer software engineers, who develop software programs and applications, and computer hardware engineers, who develop hardware such as keyboards, printers, computer chips and modems. Graduates in computer engineering can work for any company or organization that requires software or hardware engineers. Given the current reliance on computer technology in the workplace, this means that many companies require computer engineers.

Computer engineers can work in the following areas:
Software publishing; Computer systems designs; Management companies; Telecommunications companies; Quality control; Development; Large and small businesses; Governmental offices; Educational institutions; Data Entry; Secretarial/Administrative; Power User; Customer Service/Telesales; Technical Support (Production Support); Software Quality Assurance (SQA) Engineer; Software Engineer (Developer or Programmer); Business Analyst (Analyst or Systems Analyst or Analyst/Programmer or User Analyst); Tester (Test Manager); Graphic Designer; Database Administrator/Programmer (DBA); MIS/Network Administration/User Support; Technical Writer (Technical Author, Documentation Analyst); Compliance; Medicine/Diagnostic Imaging; Production Analyst; Computer Manager (Project Leader, Executive Director, Vice President); Onshore Consultant etc.

Careers in computer software development are projected to grow by 30% from 2010-2020 in USA, while jobs in computer hardware engineering are expected to grow by nine percent. In 2010, the median salary for computer software developers was 20-45 thousand taka monthly in Bangladesh and annually $87,790 in USA, while the median salary for computer hardware engineers was $98,810 in USA.

This is the most obvious approach, yet many in the industry have had long careers in computing without any formal training. Still, not all computer skills are easy to teach yourself, and as more students graduate with degrees in computer science, the competition will make it harder for the self-trained to land good jobs. A degree, certificate course, or specialized certification such as an MCSE will greatly improve your odds.
